Dumpster Dive

I ordered some new Makeup from Clinique which came today in a package.  I opened the package and took all my new products out of their smaller packaging.  A little while later I needed to take the dogs out to the bathroom before bed so I grabbed the empty package so I could toss it out in the dumpster while we were out.  Shortly thereafter as I was cleaning up the living room to head upstairs for the night I realized as I was gathering my new makeup products that the mascara I had ordered wasn’t there.  Then it dawned on me I hadn’t taken it out of the package ever and was therefore in the dumpster.  I don’t know what came over me but it was as if I had accidentally thrown away my grandmother’s wedding ring and I had to get the mascara back immediately.  Before I knew it I had grabbed a dining room chair and booked it to the dumpster.  I climbed onto the chair and hoisted myself into the dumpster.  I was easily able to find the mascara as there wasn’t a ton of  trash in the dumpster at the moment.

Then came the difficult part; I couldn’t get out of the dumpster.  Climbing in I had the chair which made it easy to jump in, but getting out there was nothing to stand on.  I had a minor freak out; what if I had to spend the whole night in the dumpster?  What if I fell asleep and the next thing I knew I was being crushed in the trash truck.  After a minute or freaking and scheming, I was able to hoist one leg all the way to the top of the dumpster grab onto the wooden shelter surrounding the dumpster and pull myself up onto the ledge of the dumpster.  I then kicked off my shoes because I didn’t want to land on my beautifully upholstered dining room chairs.  When I was finally on the ground I saw two girls sitting in their car just staring at me with their mouths open.  Then I walked away.

And by the way, best mascara ever.  Lash Power by Clinique.  Totally worth diving into a dumpster for.

Set Design: The Change Up

I saw the Change Up tonight and as soon as I got home I had to look online to get some information about the set design… I loved it.  Here is an LA Times Article with more information about the design and the designers so I won’t go into that, but I did just want to mention a few of my favorite design elements:

  • The whole entire kitchen.  White cabinets and black counter tops.  The dark floors.  Love the curtains, love the roman shades, Country Curtains sells similar ones that I’ve had my eye of for a few years now:
  • I thought the exterior of the house was beautiful but unfortunately I can’t find any photos of it online.  It was so Americana and reminded me a lot of the Father of The Bride House.
  • I loved the bathroom, especially the bathtub which I also couldn’t find a picture.  The whole bathroom was crisp, serene and spa like, but what else would you expect when the fixtures are from Restoration Hardware and Waterworks.
I loved the whole house… the designers did a great job of creating a very elegant, comfortable house.

Patty’s House

A few week’s ago I crashed at my friend Patty’s Florida house the night before I went on a cruise.  Patty has been asking me to come down for a few years now to help her decorate but I had not been able to make it down to Florida till the other week.  Here are a few (poor quality iPhone) photos of her place.

What I would change:

  • Replace all the tile in common areas with hardwood.  Not a fan of tile in living areas… it’s just so cold.  I’ve been dying for someone I know to try out IKEA’s cheapo laminate option:
  • Replace the fluorescent/ CFL light bulbs with incandescent.  Fluorescent lights especially suck all the life out of a room and belong in commercial spaces, not residential.
  • Fake plants = no, never, no way.
  • It’s very dark in the living area… there is a lot of dark wood.  One of my biggest design tips for everyone is to avoid matchy-matchy when designing a space.  Everything does not need to match, and this includes wood colors/ finishes.  Mix up light and dark colors and different textures to create a more home-like ambiance (and not so hotely).
  • I’m not going to even address the sliding door curtain issue.  Patty you know what needs to be done.  Well, if not, I would switch to a warmer color to lighten up the space and hang the curtains high and wide.
  • Art work- I haven’t confirmed this with Patty, but our friend told me that Patty got most of her furniture/ decor with the house as they were part of the model home’s decor.  I think the artwork is not cute, so I would toss what’s inside and paint the frames white and pick something cuter inside. Blowing up some personal photos is a great way for some cheap artwork for your walls.
  • Not a fan of the gargantuan TV cabinet.  I think it’s just way too big and too dark.  I like smaller consoles like this:

I think the biggest obstacle, like I mentioned before is that the space is just really dark.  I’m not a huge fan of the paint color (and the stripe) but it is warm so I think it helps.  Switching out the curtains with something lighter and downgrading the media console would help a lot.  As far as decorating, it would take a trip down there to pick out some cute pieces for the space.  Luckily for Patty there is an IKEA in Tampa which is not too far away.  Hope that helps Patty!

Chocolate Chip Cookies

One of my favorite Chocolate Chip cookie recipe comes from The Silver Palate Cookbook.

However when I whip up the dough, a good 65% of it doesn’t end up being baked but rather is consumed for my evening meal for the next 3 days along with a glass of Franzia boxed Merlot.

I did make one batch in cupcake liners and sprinkled them with sprinkles… I was worried they would burn and/ or not bake all the way through but they came out great, nice and chewy like I like.

The Silver Palate Cookbook’s Chocolate Chip Cookies

1 cup (2 sticks) unsalted butter, at room temperature, plus extra for baking sheet (I skip this and just use a silpat liner).

1 cup light brown sugar

1/4 cups granulated sugar

2 eggs

1 teaspoon vanilla extract (this larger than normal portion of vanilla gives it a really great flavor)

2 cups unbleached all-purpose flour

1 teaspoon baking soda

1 teaspoon salt

1 1/2 cups semisweet chocolate chips (I actually use a mixture of milk chocolate and semi sweet chocolate chips when I bake cookies, and I never measure I just eye ball it because I don’t like as much chocolate chips as they recommend.  I like to be able to taste some dough when I make cookies, not just chocolate).

Directions:

Preheat oven to 350, grease baking sheet.

Cream the butter and both sugars together until light and fluffy.  Add the eggs and vanilla and mix well.

Sift the dry ingredients together and mix in.  Mix in the chocolate chips.

Bake 8-10 minutes in the center rack of the oven,

Kitchen Details I Love

Julia Child’s Kitchen

Being a cook I love for my kitchen utensils and pots and pans to be within easy reach.  Julia Child’s kitchen is the ultimate example of an open kitchen.  I’ve written before about my love of hanging pot racks.  I’m also a big fan of open shelving- not for all of the kitchen, but I love one wall of open shelving by the kitchen sink.

I recently picked up these magnetic hook racks from Amazon:

I got two and put them right up on the fridge:

They are working out great- I love having my measuring cups and spoons right by the stove.

One more shot from Julia Child’s kitchen.

Christmas with the Daniel Family Part 1

I love the holidays but I dread the long car rides with my family.  We all do, which is why my family tries to take as many cars as possible when we drive to South Carolina for Christmas.

I am severely scarred for life as a result of 10+ hour-long car rides that we would take as a family when we were younger… Disney World, Camp of the Woods, South Carolina to name a few.  First of all, when I am cramped in a confined space for hours on end I would like to keep my little 2 foot radius clean and free of fast food trash.  My sisters on the other hand are not bothered by McDonald’s BBQ sauce that has spilled everywhere or hamburger wrappers all over the floor.  It drives me crazy.

Secondly, it always smells of McDonalds-scented fart in the car.  Always.  When I was much younger we would bring our dog Ribbon on car trips with us.  She has since died but to this day if it smells like fart in the car we always blame it on Ribbon.  We all know it is my dad though.

Thirdly, although my sisters and I are all in our 20s now, we get in nasty fights.  Slapping, wedgies and hair pulling is often involved.  Two summers ago I tried to jump out of the moving car on the way back from Pennsylvania.  A few years back on the way to the beach we had to pull over on the side of 95 because some argument had gotten too heated.  My sister Katherine took off running down 95 and then up into the woods on the side of the highway.  I think we were pulled over a good two hours that certain fight.

Which brings me to one of my favorite car trip stories.  Christmas of 2007 my parents had already driven down to South Carolina the day before my sisters and I were going to leave.  I got up bright and early and packed up my Camry with all my luggage and car trip essentials.  I had it all perfectly packed.  I then began what turned it to be the hours long process of trying to wake up my sisters so we could get on the road.

Unbeknownst to me, my sister Katherine had had a corneal abrasion the day before and woke up in the middle of the night in terrible pain so my sister Claire had taken her to the ER where she was given heavy pain killers and an eye patch.  They didn’t get back till something like 3 in the morning the day we were supposed to be leaving.

So at 8:00, 9:00, 10:00 am I kept on trying to wake them up.  Finally it was noon and I was really pissed and ready to go.  I went into the house and just shouted that I was leaving without them and they could drive themselves.  I really wasn’t going to leave I just wanted to scare them.

I went out of the house and started backing up my car down our driveway.  What happened next is really something out of a dream or a movie.  I look up at the front door because I hear a blood curdling scream.  I see my sister Katherine in her pajamas and eye patch (who remember is hopped up on major pain killers) pick up a huge pillar candle that was on the front steps and I kid you not it seemed like time stopped and what felt like slow motion I saw her fling that candle with all her force directly at my car.  I remember seeing it come at me in slow motion and just thinking “Oh My God I am going to die.”  The candle hit the windshield of my car had and the whole window shattered.  Suffice it to say, we had to switch to a different car.
My sister Claire then came out of the house and saw what had just transpired and smacked Katherine as hard as she could.  I remember not being sure if I was angrier that she shattered my windshield or that I would have to completely unpack the car that I had spent all morning packing perfectly.  We eventually made it down to SC late that night, eye patch and all.
