Falling Down, Chapter 3

In high school my sister Katherine and I went to see a movie at the local theater.  It was 2003 and I remember this because the movie Hulk was out and my sister and I thought it would be hilarious to get the Hulk sized popcorn…. aka the largest popcorn you can get, even larger than the largest popcorn you can normally get.  We didn’t see the Hulk, I don’t even remember what movie we did see because this story ends before we even got to our seats.

We got our Hulk sized popcorn and proceeded down the stairs to our movie.  I was carrying the popcorn and of course I tripped and fell all the way down the flight of stairs.  In the process of tripping the tub of popcorn flew in the air and the popcorn exploded out of it like an atomic bomb…. seriously it like went up 3 feet in the air and then out 4 feet before landing all over the floor, and on top of me, as I was now lying on the ground.  There were people everywhere and they all stopped and stared at me sprawled out on the floor.  I quickly got up, obviously very embarrassed.  I didn’t want all the complete strangers to think I tripped on my own accord so naturally I did what anyone would do, I slapped my sister and said “Katherine, OMG why did you push me?!?”   She looked so confused, she wasn’t sure whether to laugh, or to be mad because all the strangers were now giving her dirty looks for supposedly pushing me down the stairs.

I guess the saddest thing is we didn’t get to eat out of out Hulk sized popcorn tub.

New Dining Room Chandelier Shade

A few months ago I bought a cheapo IKEA pendant lamp to replace the ugly 70′s chandelier that came with the dining room in my rental town house.  It’s working out ok as a temporary replacement.  It did leave a little gap in the ceiling that I’ve been meaning to fix.  I finally got around to ordering a medallion from Home Depot.  Medallions are quick fixes to cover up and mess ups or to add a little decorative flare to the ceiling.  I just searched ‘medallion’ on homedepot.com and sorted it by price to find the cheapest one, this one was $8 something.  Since I’m just renting I’m not too interested in spending tons of cash on my house, just a quick fix.

My next thought is to replace the cheap shade with a slightly less cheap one from Ballard Designs.  These small Chandelier Drum Shades are only $18 but I think it would make a big difference.  I love a good drum shade.

I’m leaning towards the blue color even though I know your supposed to veer away from shades of blue in eating areas (it decreases the appetite).  Red is great to use in eating areas as it increases the appetite but I think the color.  I’ve yet to order the shade, when I do I will post a picture of my updated shade.

Calligraphy

I’m a huge fan of calligraphy for wedding invitations, place cards, wherever either done by hand or letter pressed.  Just wanted to share some photos I’ve found online recently of calligraphy I love.

I think this example is my favorite- from Designs by Robyn Love.  Everything of her’s is drool worthy.

Blik Headboard

I’ve mentioned before that I’m a fan of Blik’s product’s. I’ve been wanting to buy a bed for a while now but not really wanting to invest in one in case I meet a guy and he’s not really into a white wrought iron bed or a tufted headboard like I want, soooo for the time being I’ve settled on one of Blik’s wall decals.  I ordered their Olivia headboard in white.  It was a hard decision because my walls are so pale yellow and I’m concerned about it not showing up enough against the yellow.

I just got it in the mail and I haven’t even had a chance to open it.  I’m actually waiting to put it up because I just rearranged my room and I want to make sure that the new arrangement is how I really want to keep it because once I put the headboard up I don’t want to have to move it (even though they are apparently easy to take down and put up again).

Once I get it up I will take photos and post :)

December Style

….aka spending money I don’t have on clothes I don’t need.

Just wanted to share some shoes I’ve picked up recently that I’m enjoying:

Glitter heels…. my first pair of Christian Loubiutins!  Not.  They were $34.99 and from payless.  Wish I could find a link online but I can’t even though I just bought them.  Totally rocking them on New Years Eve, even though I can’t walk in them.

These ankle boots from a very expensive French boutique called Tar-get.  Once again, just bought them a week or two ago and can’t find the link online, sorry.

These were actually more than I should have spent… I think $100.  Of course these exact ones aren’t online either but here is similar pair:

The brand is Miz Moos and I am now a big fan.  There so not normally something I would get but I’m trying to branch out of my normal style which is boots, jeggings and a flowy blouse.

Last but not least:

Christian Soriano for Payless.  Love them.

I’ve gotten to the point that I feel more comfortable wearing heels than flats.  I guess it helps that I am 5’4″ and freakishly misproportioned and have short legs so I really do need to wear heels.

Chaise Longue

My step-mom bought me a chaise longue at an estate sale.  She said she thought it would go great it a baby’s nursery.  Hint hint.

I like it because it just seems so very french to lounge by the window.  Someday I would love to have a boudoir… basically just a massively huge closet/ dressing room/ ladies lounge where I can have a chaise.  But what woman wouldn’t want that, right?

Can I Live In This Room?

I’m way behind on my magazine reading and I’m just now reading the October issue of House Beautiful.  One of the very first ads in it was this gorgeous photo from Restoration Hardware:

The couch is what initially caught my eye but I love everything about it; the chandeliers, the placement of the artwork on the walls… in the magazine they have it darkened a bit so it looks a bit cozier.  It’s not too feminine and not too masculine.  Loves it.

And for a cool $10,995-14,695 this puppy could be yours!  I can’t imagine every living in a house that would have a room large enough to accommodate that couch but lawcy mercy I lurve it.

Merry Christmas From the Daniel Family

Pathetic, right?  I did a real tree 2 years ago and I swore I would never do a real one again until I had a husband who would put it up for me.  Until that time comes, my half dead palm? will have to do.

I Can’t Explain What Happened

I don’t know what happened the other night.  I think I lose consciousness sometimes when I go shopping.  All I know is 1) I got my Holiday bonus check at work that day and by that evening it had been spent, 2) I literally shopped till I dropped… literally, I was running into people and could barely carry the bags, and 3) I bought my first ever Kardashian Kollection item of clothing (and my first ever item of clothing from Sears, for that matter).  They were skinny legged black dress pants, and I like them very much, thank you.

Ok, so three of those bags weren’t mine, they were my coworkers, she just through them in the picture to make me look even more like a nut.  I think I have a binge shopping problem.  I like go on a high and lose the ability to think clearly.  Then I got home, looked at everything on bought and was like “what on earth just happened…?

I don’t know, still processing it.

Cookbook Update Winter 2011

I’m running out of room for cookbooks.  I’m sure I’ve mentioned it before, I read cookbooks like books, when I get one I read it cover it cover.  Their really the only books I read for pleasure.

Of course I’m a huge Pioneer Woman and I’m loving her cookbook (below is me with her at her cookbook signing last year).  I’m looking forward to her new cookbook coming our soon.  Love both of Teresa Guidice’s cookbooks (from Real Housewives of New Jersey).  They are actually really great, simple Italian recipes.  Silver Palate is a classic and has a great chocolate chip cookie recipe.

I’m in the Junior League of Northern Virginia, and it’s a well-known fact that Junior League cookbooks have some of the best recipes around, which is not good for a cookbook junkie like me.  Sine I am a JL member I can get other league’s cookbooks for super cheap.  I really have to limit myself to buying them every so often.  And of course, specifically JL cookbooks from the South would have the best recipes.

Better Homes and Gardens is a great go to cookbook for just about any recipe.  Mennonite Country Style recipes is another favorite of mine.  It’s very dear to my heart because it was written by Mennonites in the Shenandoah Valley where I went to school.  And Lord knows the Mennonites and Amish know how to cook.  The Cotton Country Collection falling apart cookbook is a hand me down from my step mom which I have yet to open but apparently a lot of her classic recipes come from it.  And then the classic Paula Deens…. and the last one I saw for sale at Mount Vernon.  I had to buy it just because it was called Southern Cooking.  I had never heard of it but I love the South and I love cooking.

Martha Stewart’s Everyday Food Mag…. I stopped subscribing… great recipes, I just don’t need them at this point in my life as a single gal with no family to feed.  Being Dead Is No Excuse (The Official Southern Ladies Guide to Hosting the Perfect Funeral)….. so absolutely ridiculous I had to buy it, but some great southern recipes.  And so spot on.  The Beyond Mac & Cheese is a reject from my step-mom that I don’t use, but I gladly taken in most cookbooks that are looking for a good home.

Someday when I have my dream kitchen I want to have a whole wall of just cookbooks.  There are a ton in my amazon wishlist at the moment.  Some days I want to just splurge and order every single one of them.  How great would that be to get an amazon package in the mail of like 50 cookbooks?
